Greek Alchemy: From the Hellenistic Age to Late Antiquity
Greek alchemy: from its emergence in Alexandria through Zosimos's systematization to the tradition's preservation in Byzantine manuscripts.
The alchemist opens the sealed flask. Inside, suspended in a clear liquid, is a small disc of metal — gold-coloured, he says, though the description is more interesting than the colour suggests. He has been working the matter for nine months. He has dissolved common copper in specially prepared vinegar, distilled the solution, calcined the residue, dissolved the calx in oil of tartar, and reduced the whole to a fine powder. He has added a small amount of a “projection powder” — a preparation the recipe does not name, the secret of the art — and the powder has fallen through the liquid and settled on the disc. The disc is now, he says, no longer copper. The powder has done its work. The disc has been transmuted.
The recipe is from the pseudo-Democritean corpus, probably the Physica et Mystica, and the date is the late first or early second century CE. - The principles — the underlying components of matter. The Greek alchemists used several different schemes: the four elements, the two principles of active and passive (or sulfur and mercury), and the later tria prima of mercury, sulfur, and salt.
The pseudo-Democritean corpus
The pseudo-Democritean corpus, attributed to the pre-Socratic philosopher Democritus of Abdera, is one of the oldest strata of the Greek alchemical tradition. The texts are not by the historical Democritus, but by a later author (sometimes called Bolus of Mendes) who worked in the Hellenistic period. Maria the Jewess (Maria Hebraea), the earliest named female alchemist of the Greek tradition, is credited with the invention or refinement of several important pieces of laboratory apparatus, including the water bath (the balneum Mariae), the tribikos (a kind of reflux distillation apparatus), and the kerotakis (a sealed apparatus for heating metals). Maria’s surviving fragments emphasise the importance of slow, careful heating, the use of sealed vessels to capture volatile spirits, and the doctrine of natural maturation. Zosimos of Panopolis
Zosimos of Panopolis, who flourished in the late third and early fourth centuries, is the most important single author of the Greek alchemical tradition. His surviving works include the On the Letter Omega, the Final Account, the Treatises on the Sacred Art, and a number of shorter fragments. The works combine laboratory recipes with allegorical, visionary, and theological passages, and they are the earliest extended alchemical treatises.
Zosimos’s most important contributions to the tradition are three, and the three are not equally well understood.
First, Zosimos articulated the religious framework of the alchemical work. The alchemist, in Zosimos’s reading, is a priest, the laboratory is a temple, and the philosopher’s stone is a divine gift. The alchemical work is a sacred drama in which the practitioner participates in the transformation of the cosmos. The framework is the inheritance of every later alchemical tradition. Second, Zosimos articulated the colour vocabulary that became the framework of the later magnum opus. He uses the colours black, white, yellow, and red in his visionary accounts, but the systematic four-colour schema of the opus magnum — four distinct, named stages mapped onto a defined sequence of operations — is principally a later Arabic (Jabirian) and Latin medieval systematisation. Synesius of Cyrene
Synesius of Cyrene (c. 373 – c. 414), a bishop and student of Hypatia of Alexandria, wrote a commentary on the pseudo-Democritean corpus that is one of the clearest expositions of the Greek alchemical tradition. Synesius’s commentary distinguishes between “sophic” mercury, the active agent of transmutation, and ordinary mercury, a distinction that became standard in the later tradition. Olympiodorus the Alchemist, who probably wrote in the late fifth or early sixth century, is the last great figure of the Alexandrian alchemical tradition. Olympiodorus wrote a long commentary on Zosimos and shorter treatises on the alchemical craft. His work is the last major Greek alchemical text before the closure of the Athenian Academy under Justinian in 529 and the Arab conquest of Egypt in the seventh century.
Olympiodorus’s importance is partly historical and partly textual. Historically, his works mark the end of the Greek alchemical tradition as a living intellectual culture. Textually, they preserve much of the earlier tradition that would otherwise be lost, and they were translated into Arabic and used by the Arab alchemists as a primary source for the Greek inheritance.
The Byzantine and Syrian preservation
After the Arab conquest of Egypt in the seventh century, the Greek alchemical tradition was preserved in the libraries of Constantinople and the monasteries of the Syrian Christian world. The most important of the preserving institutions was the Mar Saba monastery in the Judean desert, where the monk St. John of Damascus worked in the eighth century and where a large collection of Greek alchemical manuscripts was preserved. The preservation was not passive. The Syrian and Byzantine monks were reading the texts, copying them, and sometimes commenting on them, and the reading is the reason the Greek alchemical tradition survived in a usable form for the Arab translators of the eighth and ninth centuries.

The Aristotelian theory of the four elements was the foundation of matter theory. The Stoic theory of active and passive principles, the pneuma (active breath or spirit) and the underlying matter (passive substance), was the foundation of the theory of metallic composition. The Stoic theory of sympathy and antipathy was the foundation of the alchemical theory of astrological influences.
The Stoic framework was particularly important in the development of the doctrine of natural maturation. The Stoics taught that the cosmos is a single living substance, animated by a rational pneuma, and that all natural processes are the unfolding of the divine reason. The alchemists applied this framework to the metals: the metals are living substances in the earth, growing under the influence of the celestial heat, and the alchemist’s work is to assist the natural process.
The religious dimension
The Greek alchemical tradition had a strongly religious dimension, and the dimension is not separable from the laboratory work. The alchemists saw their work as a kind of priesthood, the laboratory as a kind of temple, and the philosopher’s stone as a kind of divine revelation. The religious framework was drawn from the Hermetic and gnostic traditions, with their themes of the fall of matter, the sparks of light trapped in the world, and the ascent of the soul. Fowden (1986) and Copenhaver (1992) are the standard studies.
The alchemist who is heating a metallic mixture in a sealed flask is simultaneously performing a religious exercise and participating in a cosmic drama. The unity of these three transformations — of the matter, of the practitioner, and of the cosmos — is the heart of the Greek alchemical vision. Principe (2013, ch. 1) is the right place to read the modern scholarly assessment, and the assessment is that the religious dimension is built into the foundation, not a late accretion on a fundamentally secular craft tradition.
The Greek inheritance
The Greek alchemical tradition anchors the Western alchemical inheritance. The Arabic and Latin traditions translated, absorbed, and extended the Greek texts. The medieval and early modern alchemists cited the Greek authors as authorities. To understand the alchemical tradition in any of its later forms, you have to understand its Greek origins, and the Greek origins are the most important single chapter in the history of alchemy after the practical craft of the Egyptian metalworkers.
