Famous Alchemists: The Pioneers, Mystics, and Court Adepts Who Shaped the Tradition

Biographical survey of the most influential alchemists, from Hermes Trismegistus and Maria the Jewess to Jabir, Paracelsus, Newton, and modern practitioners.

In the late 1660s, a Hamburg merchant named Hennig Brand boiled down roughly fifty buckets of his own urine in his wife Dorothea’s kitchen, looking for what he called the philosophical mercury — a liquid reagent he believed could turn base metal into gold. The smell, by all accounts, was intolerable. After months of distillation and putrefaction, the residue of the operation did something no European had ever seen: it glowed in the dark. Brand had isolated the element that would come to be called phosphorus, and the discovery was announced in 1680 by the glassmaker Johann Kunckel. (Principe, The Secrets of Alchemy, 2013, pp. 167–170.) Brand’s recipe is one of the cleanest examples of an alchemist stumbling on a real new substance, and it makes a useful point to begin with. The alchemical tradition was not, as a rule, the activity of cranks and frauds. It was a serious, technical, and sometimes extraordinarily fruitful program of inquiry, and the people who practiced it deserve to be known by name.

A note on figures who are not, strictly, historical. Several of the names below — Hermes Trismegistus, Maria the Jewess, the pseudo-Democritus, Ostanes — are legendary or pseudonymous. They are included because the alchemists treated them as authorities and because the figures that grew up around them shaped the tradition. A reader who wants to know what the alchemists actually believed has to read the texts they actually cited, legendary or not.

Legendary and pseudo-eponymous founders

Hermes Trismegistus

No figure is more important to the alchemical tradition than Hermes Trismegistus — “Hermes the Thrice-Greatest.” He is not a historical person. He is a composite figure, the product of the fusion of the Greek god Hermes with the Egyptian god Thoth, who emerges in the Hellenistic period as the mythical author of an enormous body of religious, philosophical, and technical writing. The Hermetic corpus, as it has come down to us, was probably composed in Egypt between the first and fourth centuries CE, and it includes both the philosophical treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum and the short technical alchemical texts that circulate under Hermes’s name.

The most famous single alchemical text attributed to Hermes is the Emerald Tablet, a brief, dense, and cryptic work that became the foundational scripture of Western alchemy. Its central maxim — “That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above” — captures the entire Hermetic vision of the cosmos as a network of correspondences. Every medieval alchemist cited the Tablet, and many built their entire theory on it. Isaac Casaubon’s demonstration in 1614 that the Hermetic texts were not as old as their defenders claimed did not, in the event, destroy their authority. By 1614 the alchemical tradition had been reading the Tablet for half a millennium, and the dating controversy was, for working alchemists, an academic point.

Maria the Jewess

Maria the Jewess — also known as Maria Hebraea or Mary the Prophetess — is one of the foundational figures of the alchemical tradition and one of its most important early female practitioners. She is credited in the early alchemical sources with the invention or refinement of several pieces of laboratory apparatus that are still in use, including the water bath (balneum Mariae, “Mary’s bath” — your kitchen bain-marie is named after her), the tribikos (a reflux distillation apparatus), and the kerotakis (a sealed apparatus for heating metals in controlled atmospheres). The kerotakis in particular is a sophisticated piece of design; modern reconstructions show that it would have worked as advertised.

Maria’s surviving fragments emphasize the importance of careful, slow heating, the use of sealed vessels to capture volatile spirits, and the doctrine that the alchemist must work in cooperation with the natural processes of maturation rather than forcing them. She is invoked throughout the later alchemical tradition as an authority on laboratory technique and as the patroness of the practical craft. The pseudo-Democritus

A large body of early alchemical writing was attributed to Democritus of Abdera, the pre-Socratic atomist philosopher. The attributions are fictitious; the actual author of these texts is sometimes called “Bolus of Mendes” and is probably a Hellenistic Egyptian. The pseudo-Democritean corpus includes the Physica et Mystica and the On Making Gold, both of which present recipes for the production of imitation gold and silver together with philosophical interpretations that link the transmutational project to natural processes of ripening and maturation. These texts are the earliest substantial sources for the doctrine that metals grow in the earth, which becomes the conceptual basis of the transmutational program in every later tradition.

Ostanes and the Persian connection

Several early alchemical texts are attributed to Ostanes, a legendary Persian sage associated with the court of Xerxes. The Ostanes texts are part of a broader pattern in which alchemists sought to legitimize their project by linking it to ancient Eastern wisdom. The figure of Ostanes connects Greco-Egyptian alchemy to the Persian and Mesopotamian intellectual traditions, and to the broader Orientalist mythography that the Hermetic and gnostic movements cultivated.

The Greek and Roman period

Zosimos of Panopolis

The most important individual alchemist of the late antique world is Zosimos of Panopolis (fl. c. 300 CE), an Egyptian Greek alchemist who wrote the largest surviving body of early alchemical literature. Zosimos’s On the Letter Omega, his Final Account, and his visionary Vision — the earliest visionary alchemical text — are the earliest extended alchemical compositions, and they contain a mixture of laboratory recipes, visionary accounts of alchemical process, and theological reflection that is strange and unlike anything else in the surviving record. Zosimos drew on the Hermetic, gnostic, and Christian traditions of his time, and his writings influenced every later alchemical author.

Zosimos’s most famous and most durable contribution is the doctrine of the magnum opus, the multi-stage process by which the philosopher’s stone is produced. He distinguished four major stages, each associated with a color: the black (melanosis), the white (leukosis), the yellow (xanthosis), and the red (iosis). The four-color scheme became canonical in the Western tradition; the citrinitas, often counted as a fifth stage, is a later Latin addition first articulated in the Rosarium philosophorum (c. 1550). The reader should note that the color vocabulary we use today is essentially Zosimos’s, two thousand years on.

Synesius and the technical tradition

Synesius of Cyrene, a fourth-century bishop and student of Hypatia of Alexandria, left a commentary on the pseudo-Democritean corpus that is one of the clearest expositions of early alchemical theory. Synesius distinguished between “animated” mercury, the active agent of transmutation, and ordinary mercury, a distinction that became standard in later alchemical literature. The Arabic Golden Age

Jabir ibn Hayyan

Jabir ibn Hayyan (c. 721 – c. 815), known to the Latin West as Geber, is the most consequential figure of the Arabic alchemical tradition and one of the founders of chemistry as a discipline. The vast Arabic corpus attributed to Jabir includes theoretical works on the composition of metals, practical treatises on alchemy and astrology, and a series of texts on the mystical and religious dimensions of the work. Whether all these texts are by the same author is doubtful; the corpus is large, stylistically uneven, and probably contains later accretions. But its theoretical core is consistent: a system of matter based on the four elements and the tria prima, combined in different proportions and qualities, and a corresponding program of laboratory research to test and refine that system.

Jabir’s experimental program is particularly notable. He called for systematic, repeated trials, careful attention to apparatus, and skepticism toward untested claims — a set of methodological commitments that would not look out of place in a twentieth-century chemistry department. He developed a sophisticated theory of balances and qualities, a numerological scheme that linked the letters of the Arabic alphabet to the properties of substances, and a comprehensive program of research into the composition of metals. The Latin West knew Jabir through the writings of the pseudo-Geber of the thirteenth century, and the influence of his theoretical system on later alchemy is incalculable. Al-Razi

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyya al-Razi (c. 854 – c. 925), known to the Latins as Rhazes, brought the systematic and empirical methods of the Arabic scientific tradition to bear on alchemy and medicine. Al-Razi’s Kitab al-Asrar (“Book of Secrets”) is a comprehensive classification of substances, apparatus, and laboratory procedures that became a standard reference for both Arabic and Latin alchemists. His Sirr al-Asrar (“Secret of Secrets”) contains a detailed theory of matter organized around mercury, sulfur, salt, and a fourth “earth” or philosophical stone principle, and it is one of the key theoretical texts of the Arabic alchemical tradition. (Al-Razi’s Sirr al-Asrar is distinct from the pseudo-Aristotelian Secretum Secretorum that circulated in Latin as Secret of Secrets — a different book with a confusingly similar title.)

Al-Razi is also a major figure in the history of medicine, and his medical encyclopedia al-Hawi was translated into Latin and used in European medical schools for centuries. The alchemical and medical sides of his work were, in his own practice, inseparable; the same clinician who classified hundreds of drugs was also running laboratory trials on metallic transmutation. He is, by any measure, one of the most important natural philosophers of the medieval world.

The later Arabic tradition

After Jabir and al-Razi, the Arabic alchemical tradition continued in the writings of figures like al-Majriti (d. c. 1004, to whom the Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm / Picatrix and the Rutbat al-Ḥakīm are attributed), the Ikhwan al-Safa (Brethren of Purity), and al-Jildaki (d. c. 1342), whose enormous Book of the Silvery Water and the Starry Earth integrates the Arabic alchemical inheritance with the Hermetic, gnostic, and Ismaili traditions and preserves many earlier texts that would otherwise be lost. Medieval Europe

Roger Bacon

Roger Bacon (c. 1214 – 1292), the English Franciscan friar and polymath, is the most important alchemical writer of the thirteenth century. Bacon’s alchemical works include commentaries on the Emerald Tablet, treatises on the composition of metals, and practical guides to laboratory procedure; he also wrote on optics, mathematics, and the possibility of mechanical flight. Bacon’s broader program of empirical natural philosophy included alchemy as one of the operative sciences, and he argued that the philosopher’s stone, if it could be prepared, would have enormous practical benefits. Bacon was imprisoned by his Franciscan superiors in 1278 for “suspected novelties,” and the legend of his having made the stone in prison dates from later tradition — no contemporary evidence supports it. The imprisonment is well documented; the transmutation is not.

Albertus Magnus

Albert the Great (c. 1200 – 1280), the Dominican friar, bishop of Regensburg, and universal scholar, was an important alchemist as well as the most prolific natural philosopher of the Latin Middle Ages. Albert’s De Mineralibus contains a thorough treatment of metals, minerals, and the alchemical theory of metallic composition, and he is credited with a series of alchemical works including the Tractatus de Alchemia and the Semita Recta. Albert’s alchemy is integrated into a broader Aristotelian framework, and he argues that the transmutation of base metals into gold is in principle possible, though in practice extraordinarily difficult. His student Thomas Aquinas wrote less directly on alchemy, but the broader Thomistic synthesis absorbed the alchemical inheritance into the orthodox scholastic tradition.

Nicolas Flamel

Nicolas Flamel (c. 1330 – 1418), a Parisian scrivener and property owner, is the most famous lay alchemist of the late Middle Ages. Flamel’s legend, which grew up rapidly after his death, holds that he succeeded in preparing the philosopher’s stone and that he and his wife Pernelle achieved personal immortality, appearing to various witnesses in the centuries after their official deaths. Flamel was a real person, the author of a short alchemical treatise (Le Livre des Figures Hiéroglyphiques), but the immortality legend is the work of later writers. The Flamel legend was enormously influential in later alchemical literature, and the alchemy in art tradition includes many visual treatments of the Flamel story. Flamel is the test case for separating the historical alchemist from the alchemical myth — both are interesting, but they are not the same thing.

George Ripley

George Ripley (c. 1415 – 1490), an English Augustinian canon, is the most important English alchemist of the fifteenth century. Ripley’s Compound of Alchemy is a long allegorical poem that synthesizes the alchemical tradition, and it became one of the most copied alchemical texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Ripley drew on the Arabic, Hermetic, and Latin medieval traditions and presented the magnum opus as a Christian spiritual exercise, in the manner of the German and Flemish religious alchemists who would follow him.

The Renaissance and early modern period

Paracelsus

Theophrastus von Hohenheim, known as Paracelsus (1493 – 1541), is the most consequential medical reformer of the early modern period and the founder of chemical medicine. Paracelsus rejected the Galenic tradition in favor of a new pharmacology based on alchemical theory. He argued that diseases had specific chemical causes, that the body was a chemical system governed by the tria prima, and that the proper remedies were purified mineral and metallic preparations rather than the herbal compounds of the inherited materia medica. He publicly burned the Galenic Canon of Avicenna at Basel in 1527, marking a public break with the medical establishment. The bonfire was good theatre; whether it was good medicine is another question.

Paracelsus’s medical system was integrated with a broader program of natural philosophy, theology, and eschatology. He taught that the human being was a microcosm in which the four elements and the three principles were combined in unique proportions, and that the proper study of medicine required the study of nature as a whole. His alchemical writings include the Archidoxes of Magic, the Aurora of the Philosophers, and the Treasury of Treasures for the Philosophers. The Labyrinthus Medicorum Errantium (1538) is his most pointed attack on the established medical faculty, and it is also one of the more readable of his works.

Paracelsus’s followers, known as the Paracelsians, dominated chemical medicine for a century after his death and shaped the development of pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutics. The most important of his followers were Leonhard Thurneisser, Joseph Duchesne (Quercetanus), and the German salt-maker Johann Thölde (c. 1565 – c. 1614), who published the Triumphal Chariot of Antimony (1604) under the pseudonym “Basil Valentine.” The real attribution to Thölde is now standard in the literature (Principe, The Secrets of Alchemy, 2013, pp. 137–151; Newman, Promethean Ambitions, 2004, pp. 235–246). Thölde is the most consequential literary forgery in the history of early modern chemistry, and Principe’s case for the attribution is one of the more satisfying pieces of historical detective work in the secondary literature.

Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727), the most rigorous natural philosopher of the early modern period, devoted more than thirty years of his career to alchemical research, and his alchemical manuscripts fill more than a million words. Newton’s alchemical program was, in his own understanding, integral to his larger program of natural philosophy. He read the inherited alchemical literature, conducted his own laboratory experiments with metals and minerals, and incorporated alchemical concepts into his account of the structure of matter in the Principia and the Opticks. The recovery of Newton’s alchemical manuscripts in the twentieth century, beginning with Keynes’s 1936 purchase and continued by Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs, William R. Newman, and Lawrence Principe, transformed our understanding of his career (Newman, Newton the Alchemist, 2018).

Robert Boyle

Robert Boyle (1627 – 1691), often called the father of modern chemistry, was a serious alchemist for most of his career. Boyle’s alchemical work included the search for the philosopher’s stone, the preparation of aurum potabile (drinkable gold), and a long series of laboratory experiments with mercury, antimony, and other metals. The Sceptical Chymist (1661), which is often cited as the founding document of modern chemistry, was written by an alchemist criticizing other alchemists, not by a modern chemist attacking the alchemical tradition as a whole. Boyle’s later writings, particularly the Origin of Forms and Qualities (1666), show a continuing engagement with the alchemical theory of qualities. Johann Joachim Becher and Georg Ernst Stahl

Becher (1635 – 1682) and Stahl (1659 – 1734) were the founders of the phlogiston theory, the last major chemical theory to use an alchemical framework. Stahl’s theory held that a metal is a calx united with phlogiston, the principle of combustibility; calcination drives off the phlogiston to leave the calx as a powder, and smelting reunites the calx with phlogiston from the charcoal. The phlogiston theory was thus a corpuscular-mechanist chemistry, post-alchemical in spirit, not a continuation of alchemical theory (Principe, The Secrets of Alchemy, 2013, pp. 195–211). The theory dominated chemistry for a century and was only displaced by Lavoisier’s oxygen theory of combustion in the 1780s.

George Starkey

George Starkey (1628 – 1665), an English-American colonist who later moved to London, is the most important alchemist of the mid-seventeenth century in the English-speaking world. Starkey wrote extensively under the pseudonym “Eirenaeus Philalethes,” and he was a direct influence on Newton, who copied large portions of Starkey’s work into his own laboratory notebooks. Starkey’s career bridges the Paracelsian and the more rigorously experimental traditions of the late seventeenth century (Newman, Promethean Ambitions, 2004, pp. 247–273). Newman’s reconstruction of the Starkey–Newton relationship is, in my view, the most important single result of the late-twentieth-century recovery of seventeenth-century English alchemy; it shows that Newton did not invent his alchemical program out of the inherited literature but inherited it, in large part, from a specific transatlantic predecessor.

Hennig Brand

Brand, the Hamburg merchant who discovered phosphorus in 1669, deserves a second mention here. The case is worth returning to because it is the cleanest example of an alchemist stumbling on a real new substance, and it marks one of the transition points between alchemical and modern chemical practice. Brand was not a fraud and not a fool; he was running a serious alchemical experiment with serious alchemical theory behind it, and the result was a real element that would matter to chemistry for the next three centuries. The smelly urine in Dorothea’s kitchen produced a substance that lit the new century’s candle.

The hermetic and esoteric revival

The Comte de Saint-Germain

The Count of Saint-Germain (c. 1712 – 1784) is a transitional figure between the early modern and the modern esoteric traditions. A court diplomat, amateur musician, painter, and self-proclaimed alchemist, Saint-Germain appeared at the courts of Louis XV, Frederick the Great, and Catherine the Great and claimed to be centuries old. Whether he actually practiced alchemy is unclear; his legend became a fixture of the later occult revival and contributed the stock image of the mysterious aristocratic adept who possesses the secret of the philosopher’s stone. Horace Walpole, Madame de Pompadour, and Casanova are among the contemporaries who left accounts of meeting him, and none of the three seems to have believed in the centuries-old claim.

Helena Blavatsky and the Theosophical synthesis

Helena Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 and gave alchemy a central role in her syncretic esoteric system. Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine (1888) and Isis Unveiled (1877) present alchemy as a wisdom tradition descended from the ancient mystery schools and as the spiritual ancestor of modern science. The Theosophical synthesis influenced the Golden Dawn, the Anthroposophical Society, and much of the modern popular image of alchemy — a fact that working historians tend to find exasperating and that practitioners of the modern esoteric revival tend to find foundational.

Carl Jung

Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961) was a Swiss psychologist and the founder of analytical psychology. Jung’s Psychology of the Transference (1946) and Mysterium Coniunctionis (1955) offer a sustained reading of alchemical imagery as a symbolic map of the processes of the unconscious, particularly the process of psychic integration that Jung called individuation. The Jungian reading has been enormously influential in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and remains the most widely read modern interpretation of the tradition. Jung’s work has shaped how contemporary readers understand the philosopher’s stone and the magnum opus as psychological symbols, and the influence is not going away.

Modern practitioners

A small but persistent community of contemporary practitioners continues to work within the alchemical tradition. The most visible modern project is the spagyric revival, centered on the preparation of plant and mineral medicines using alchemical methods. Modern spagyric practitioners are not attempting to transmute lead into gold, and they generally present their work as a form of pharmacology informed by the alchemical tradition. The legacy of the alchemists

The legacy of the alchemists is substantial and not always recognized. Their laboratory apparatus — the alembic, the retort, the athanor, the pelican, the cucurbit — bears the names of alchemical practice, and their techniques of distillation, sublimation, calcination, and digestion are direct ancestors of modern chemical method. Their theoretical conviction that the differences among substances are differences of proportion in a small number of basic constituents is the conceptual foundation of modern chemistry, even though the basic constituents they proposed were wrong. Their symbolic and religious traditions remain a living part of the Western esoteric tradition, and they have been taken up by depth psychology, comparative religion, and contemporary esoteric orders.

The alchemists were not isolated specialists; they corresponded, visited one another’s laboratories, attended the same universities and courts, and participated in the broader religious, philosophical, and political conversations of their times. The alchemical tradition was a social and intellectual network as well as a body of theory and practice, and the network was one of the most important factors in the development of early modern natural philosophy.
