Alchemy in Ancient Egypt and the Hellenistic World
Origins of alchemy in Greco-Roman Egypt: the Leiden and Stockholm papyri, Maria the Jewess, Zosimos of Panopolis, and the Hermetic tradition.
A papyrus sold in the early nineteenth century from the collections of the Anastasi family, now in the University of Leiden, is the closest thing the alchemical tradition has to a founding document. The Leiden Papyrus X, copied probably in the third century CE but drawing on recipes of much greater antiquity, contains recipes. That is the striking thing. Not theory, not allegory, not visionary ascent — recipes. How to make asem, the gold-silver alloy that was the ancient world’s most reliable counterfeit. How to make copper look like gold. How to dye cloth in imitation of the expensive Tyrian purple. How to colour glass. How to prepare metallic inks for writing. The papyrus is the most important single witness to the workshop practice that preceded and then fed into the theoretical alchemical tradition of the next two millennia.
What the Leiden Papyrus X is not, and this is the point the modern reader tends to miss, is “alchemy” in the full sense. The recipes are practical. They are the work of a craft tradition — metalworkers, dyers, jewellers, counterfeiters — that the Greek-speaking world inherited from the Egyptian temple workshops. The theoretical claims of alchemy, the doctrine of transmutation, the religious framework of the laboratory, the visionary ascent of the soul through the planetary spheres, are not in the Leiden Papyrus X. They appear later, in the Greek alchemical corpus of the third and fourth centuries, and the appearance is the moment the craft tradition becomes alchemy. The Leiden and Stockholm papyri are the foundation. What the foundation is the foundation of is a separate question, and the answer is contested.
The setting: Alexandria, the most cosmopolitan city in the world
Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE and capital of the Ptolemaic dynasty, was the cultural capital of the Hellenistic world. Its library and museum gathered the literary, scientific, and religious inheritance of Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Levant. By the first century CE, the city had a population of perhaps half a million, including Greeks, Egyptians, Jews, Syrians, and Arabs. The temple of Sarapis, the great civic cult, was a meeting point for Greek and Egyptian religious traditions. The Jewish community of Alexandria produced the famous Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible, including the writings of Philo of Alexandria, which would later influence the development of Hermeticism.
It is in this ferment that the alchemical tradition emerged, and the ferment is the point. Alchemy could not have arisen in any single one of the contributing cultures, but only in the cosmopolitan mixing of Hellenistic Alexandria. The theoretical language of the new tradition was Greek, drawing on the philosophy of Aristotle and the Stoics. The technical vocabulary included Egyptian words for substances, apparatus, and procedures. The religious framework drew on the Hermetic and gnostic traditions that flourished in the same cultural milieu.
The papyri of Leiden and Stockholm
The Leiden Papyrus X and the Stockholm Papyrus, both probably compiled in the third century CE and both first edited by Marcellin Berthelot in his Collection des anciens alchimistes grecs (1888), are the two most important surviving documents of early practical alchemy. They are similar in content and probably drew on a common workshop tradition. The Leiden Papyrus is held at the University of Leiden; the Stockholm Papyrus is in the collections of the Swedish National Museum.
The recipes in these papyri are purely practical. They include procedures for preparing “asem,” a gold-silver alloy used as a substitute for true gold; for the surface treatment of base metals to make them look like silver or gold; for the dyeing of cloth in imitation of expensive purple dyes; for the preparation of coloured glasses and gemstones; for the manufacture of metallic inks for writing. The recipes are written in a terse, technical idiom that suggests a working workshop, not a philosophical treatise. There are no theoretical claims, no doctrine of transmutation, no religious framework. There are recipes.
The papyri establish two important facts about the early tradition. First, the practical alchemical craft of metal-colouring and alloy-making was well developed in the third century, with a sophisticated knowledge of metals, alloys, and surface treatments. Second, the craft had not yet been elevated into a philosophical programme. The Leiden and Stockholm papyri are the workshop. The Greek alchemical corpus of Zosimos, the pseudo-Democritus, and Maria the Jewess is what the workshop became when it acquired a theory of matter, a theory of transmutation, and a religious framework.
Maria the Jewess and the laboratory apparatus
Maria the Jewess (also called Maria Hebraea, or Mary the Prophetess) is one of the most important figures of the early alchemical tradition, and she is the earliest named female alchemist whose name has come down to us. The works attributed to her are probably not by a single author, and some of them may be pseudonymous. But her name was associated with the technical and craft tradition of early alchemy, and the alchemists who came after her treated her as a foundational authority. Maria is credited in the later sources with the invention or refinement of several pieces of laboratory apparatus that became standard in the alchemical and chemical traditions. The most important of Maria’s inventions is the water bath, known in the Latin tradition as the balneum Mariae (“Mary’s bath”) — a double-vessel apparatus in which the substance to be heated is placed in a smaller vessel set within a larger vessel of water, which is itself heated. Maria is also credited with the invention of the tribikos, a three-armed distillation apparatus, and the kerotakis, a sealed apparatus for heating metals in controlled atmospheres. The kerotakis allowed the alchemist to heat metals for extended periods without the loss of volatile components. The historical Maria is a shadowy figure. The works attributed to her are probably pseudonymous, and the figure of Maria the Jewess is as much a legend as a person. But the legend is itself an important historical document. It shows that the later alchemical tradition wanted to attribute the invention of the laboratory apparatus to a named authority, and it shows that the attribution of the apparatus to Maria was an act of foundation.
Hermes Trismegistus and the Hermetic inheritance
No figure is more important to the early alchemical tradition than Hermes Trismegistus, “Hermes the Thrice-Greatest.” The name is a Greek rendering of the Egyptian Thoth, the ibis-headed god of writing, magic, and wisdom, fused with the Greek god Hermes, the messenger and patron of the practical arts. The composite figure is the supposed author of a vast body of religious, philosophical, and technical writing that circulated under his name, and the Hermetic tradition is treated in detail in the cluster on Hermeticism. The Hermetic corpus falls into two main parts. The philosophical Hermetica, represented by the treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum (a Greek collection known to the Latin West since Ficino’s translation in the 1460s) and the related texts in the Codex Askewianus and the Codex Berlinensis, are religious and philosophical dialogues that present a systematic account of the cosmos, the soul, and the path to divine knowledge. The technical Hermetica are short alchemical and magical texts that present recipes and procedures under Hermes’s name. The most famous of the technical Hermetica is the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, whose central maxim — “That which is above is like to that which is below” — became the most quoted sentence in the entire alchemical corpus.
The Hermetic tradition gave the alchemical tradition its religious and philosophical framework. The cosmos is a single living, ensouled whole, created by a single divine mind (the Nous) and animated by a single divine breath (the Pneuma). The human being is a microcosm in which the structure of the cosmos is repeated. The alchemist is both a worker in metals and a priest of the cosmos, and the alchemical work is the material correlate of the soul’s ascent back to the divine. Zosimos of Panopolis: the founding alchemist
The most important individual alchemist of the late antique period is Zosimos of Panopolis, who flourished in the late third and early fourth centuries. Zosimos was an Egyptian Greek, possibly associated with the temple of Panopolis (modern Akhmim) in Upper Egypt. He wrote in Greek, and his surviving works include the largest body of early alchemical writing that can be confidently attributed to a single author.
Zosimos’s On the Letter Omega and his Final Account are the earliest extended alchemical treatises. They combine laboratory recipes, allegorical and visionary passages, and theological reflection. Zosimos describes his own alchemical work in language borrowed from the religious traditions of the period: the alchemist is a priest, the laboratory is a temple, the philosopher’s stone is a divine revelation. The famous “Vision of the Pauline transformation of the alchemist” in the On the Letter Omega describes the alchemist being consumed and reconstituted by the divine fire, in imagery that is unmistakably baptismal.
Zosimos articulated three things that became central to the later alchemical tradition. First, he articulated the religious framework of the alchemical work, and the alchemist-as-priest is a Zosiman legacy. Second, he articulated the doctrine of the magnum opus, the multi-stage process by which the philosopher’s stone is produced. Zosimos uses the colour vocabulary of black, white, yellow, and red in his visionary accounts, but — and this is a point Newman has laboured in The “Emerald Tablet” and the Origin of the “Summa perfectionis” (2019) — the systematic four-colour schema of the opus magnum is principally a later Arabic (Jabirian) and Latin medieval systematisation, not Zosimos’s own framework. Third, Zosimos preserved the work of his predecessors, including Maria the Jewess, the pseudo-Democritus, and the legendary Ostanes. The pseudo-Democritean corpus
A large body of early alchemical writing was attributed to Democritus of Abdera, the pre-Socratic philosopher of nature. The attributions are fictitious. The actual author is sometimes called “Bolus of Mendes,” a Hellenistic Egyptian who probably lived in the second or first century BCE. The pseudo-Democritean corpus includes the Physica et Mystica and the On Making Gold, both of which present recipes for the production of imitation gold and silver together with philosophical interpretations that link the transmutational programme to natural processes of ripening and maturation. The best modern edition is Matteo Martelli’s The Four Books of Pseudo-Democritus (2014), which supersedes the older editions and is the first to treat the corpus as a coherent body of texts. The pseudo-Democritean texts are the first to articulate the doctrine of natural maturation in a developed form. Metals grow in the earth like plants; gold is the fully ripened form of the metallic seed. The implication is that the alchemist’s task is to accelerate and complete the natural process. The doctrine is the conceptual foundation of the entire transmutational programme, and the place where the practical craft of the Leiden and Stockholm papyri is integrated with a theoretical framework.
The religious context: gnosticism and Hermeticism
The alchemical tradition emerged in the same intellectual milieu that produced the Hermetic and gnostic religious movements, and the three are intertwined from the start. The gnostic movements of the second and third centuries taught that the material world is a fallen copy of a higher spiritual reality, and that the work of the sage is to recover the sparks of light trapped in matter. This narrative maps onto the alchemical project: the base metal is the fallen copy, the philosopher’s stone is the recovered light, the alchemist’s labour is the work of salvation.
The Hermetic tradition provided the cosmic framework. The cosmos is a single living, ensouled whole, and the human being is a microcosm in which the structure of the macrocosm is repeated. The alchemical work is the material correlate of the soul’s ascent back to the divine.
The combination of these two currents gave the alchemical tradition its characteristic flavour: a sober commitment to laboratory work combined with a religious vision of cosmic transformation. The historian who is trying to understand why the alchemists wrote the way they did, with their characteristic mixture of recipe and vision, has to understand the gnostic and Hermetic context. Copenhaver (1992) and Fowden (1986) are the standard studies, and they should be read together.
The late antique decline and the preservation of the texts
By the fifth and sixth centuries, the alchemical tradition in Egypt was in decline. The Christianisation of the Roman Empire, the closing of the Athenian and Alexandrian academies (Justinian closed the Athenian Academy in 529), and the Arab conquest of Egypt in the seventh century all disrupted the institutional settings in which the tradition had flourished. The alchemical texts were preserved in the libraries of Constantinople and the monasteries of the Syrian and Byzantine worlds, where they would be rediscovered and translated by the Arab scholars of the eighth and ninth centuries.
The most important of the late antique alchemical compilations is the Codex Marcianus (Marcianus graecus 299), a Greek manuscript of the tenth or eleventh century held in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. The Codex Marcianus contains many of the texts of the earlier tradition, including works attributed to Zosimos, Maria the Jewess, and the pseudo-Democritus, and it is one of the most important primary sources for the early history of alchemy.
Why the Egyptian origin matters
The Egyptian and Hellenistic origins of the alchemical tradition anchor a way of thinking about matter and transformation that has shaped Western intellectual life for two thousand years. The alchemists’ conviction that matter is unified, that transformation is possible, and that the laboratory is a sacred space is the inheritance that the modern world has, in part, abandoned and in part unconsciously preserved.
The famous Greek temples, the Egyptian crafts, the Hermetic and gnostic religions of the Hellenistic world — these are the roots. The Arabic, medieval, and early modern traditions are the trunk and the branches. The modern esoteric revival, the Jungian reading, and the popular image of the alchemist are the leaves. To understand the leaves, you have to go back to the roots. Principe (2013) makes the point: the alchemical tradition is a coherent intellectual project that runs from the third century CE to the seventeenth, and the seventeenth-century practitioners were working on problems that had been formulated in the Greek-speaking workshops of Roman Egypt.
