Alchemical Symbols and Notation: The Visual Language of Transformation

A guide to alchemical symbols: planetary metals, the tria prima, process glyphs, color stages, dragons, and the ouroboros.

Open folio 17r of the Aurora Consurgens — that early fifteenth-century codex now resting in Zurich, Zentralbibliothek, MS Rh. 172 — and you are met with a wall of saturated red and lapis blue. A crowned king sits inside a circular flask. A lion, very green, is eating a sun. A naked couple embraces on a checkered floor, and an enormous crowned hermaphrodite with both breasts and a beard holds the solar and lunar disks like juggling pins. This is what an alchemical page looks like when no one is editing it for legibility, and most surviving alchemical manuscripts look exactly like this: dense, gorgeous, and resistant to quick interpretation. The point of this pillar page is to make that resistance productive.

The visual vocabulary alchemists developed between roughly the first and the seventeenth centuries is one of the densest semiotic systems in the Western esoteric tradition. It includes planetary signs that are still doing duty in modern horoscopes, elemental triangles that are the ancestors of the symbols for the four states of matter, process glyphs for distillation and calcination, and a small set of vivid composite images — the ouroboros, the green lion, the king and queen, the rebis — that recur across a thousand manuscripts and printed books. Why alchemists used symbols

A modern chemist writes sulfuric acid as H₂SO₄. The notation is public, standardized, and intelligible to anyone with the relevant training. The alchemical notation for the same substance was a green lion devouring the sun — an emblem you will find carved above the door of more than one seventeenth-century laboratory, including the one Hennig Brand kept in Hamburg before he stumbled on phosphorus. The difference is substantive, and it reflects a different theoretical commitment.

The alchemist did not think of a substance as a fixed combination of elements in definite proportions. A substance was a dynamic balance of qualities and principles, an ongoing process, and its representation had to capture the process. The green lion is a picture of vitriol — green iron(II) sulfate, the alchemical atramentum viride — and the “devouring” of the sun means the dissolution of gold in the oil of vitriol distilled from it. The image thus encodes both the substance and the operation in a single emblem. (Principe, The Secrets of Alchemy, 2013, pp. 30–38.) The famous alchemical principle that “the vessel instructs the work” runs in the same direction: the apparatus is a piece of theory.

The use of symbols also served a social function. Alchemy was a partly secret art, transmitted from master to student, and the symbolic vocabulary was one of the bonds that held the tradition together. A student who could read the symbols was presumed to have access to the right texts, the right teachers, the right preparation. Outsiders looking at the same symbols saw only confusing pictures — and that is exactly what the system was designed to produce for the uninitiated. Whether the obscurity was a genuine code or a literary strategy of concealment is a debate that goes back at least to Isaac Casaubon’s 1614 demonstration that the Corpus Hermeticum was not as old as it claimed to be. Both motives were at work, often in the same text, and the resulting system of signs became one of the densest visual vocabularies in Western intellectual history.

Finally, the alchemical symbol was a tool of thought. The medieval and early modern alchemists worked in a tradition in which image, word, and thing were continuous with one another, and the symbol was the place where the three met. The dragon in the flask, the king in his bath, the ouroboros were not arbitrary pictures; they were instruments of contemplation. To read the symbol correctly was, in some sense, to perform the operation it described. The planetary metals

The most familiar alchemical system is the set of signs for the seven planetary metals, drawn from late antique and medieval astrology. Each metal was associated with a planet, and each planet had a god, a day of the week, an organ of the body, and a set of qualities. The associations were consistent across the Greek, Arabic, and Latin traditions and remained standard until the eighteenth century.

These seven signs are the ancestors of the modern astronomical symbols still in use, and they are the immediate ancestors of the astrological symbols that continue to circulate in popular horoscopes. In an alchemical text they did double duty. Each was a shorthand for both the metal and the corresponding planet, and a recipe calling for “the influence of Saturn” might literally be asking for lead — which is why modern editors of alchemical recipes spend so much time distinguishing astrological color from chemical color.

The alchemists extended the planetary scheme in several directions. They added antimony, bismuth, zinc, and platinum as metals without classical planetary correspondences, and they developed a more complex system linking the metals to the zodiacal signs, the lunar mansions, and the decans (the thirty-six ten-degree divisions of the ecliptic). The four elements

The alchemists inherited the Aristotelian system of the four elements — earth, water, air, and fire — and developed their own symbols for each. The standard Western alchemical symbols are an upward-pointing triangle for fire, a downward-pointing triangle for water, an upward triangle crossed by a horizontal bar for air, and a downward triangle crossed by a horizontal bar for earth. The same signs appear in modern astronomical notation, and they are the ancestors of the symbols for the four states of matter used in some modern esoteric texts.

A fifth element, the quinta essentia or quintessence, was sometimes added to the system. The quintessence was the substance of the heavenly bodies, the medium of the celestial spheres, and the active principle that animated all matter. The alchemists’ search for the quintessence was the search for a single principle that explained the unity of the cosmos. It is one of the closer points of contact between alchemy and the Aristotelian physics taught in the medieval universities.

The tria prima

The tria prima of mercury, sulfur, and salt was introduced by Jabir ibn Hayyan and later popularized by Paracelsus and his followers. Each principle was represented by a distinctive symbol, often derived from planetary or elemental signs.

  • Mercury (☿) was the principle of fusibility, volatility, and liquidity. Its symbol is the caduceus, the staff of the messenger god. The same sign, in a different hand, names the planet Mercury and the metal mercury — a fact that produced centuries of deliberate confusion in the literature.
  • Sulfur (🜍) was the principle of combustibility, color, and the soul. Its symbol is a triangle resting on a cross, sometimes drawn with a small hook at the top.
  • Salt (🜔) was the principle of solidity, fixity, and the body. Its symbol is a circle divided by a cross, and it is the ancestor of the modern symbol for Earth in some esoteric contexts.

The three signs together represent the alchemical theory of matter: every substance is a unique combination of these three principles, and the art of the alchemist is to adjust the proportions to produce the desired transformation. The tria prima is, in this sense, a chemical notation and a metaphysical claim in the same set of strokes. Modern readers sometimes want to dismiss it as a primitive version of the periodic table; the better analogy is to a balance-of-humor theory inherited from Galen and applied to the inorganic world.

Processes and operations

The alchemists developed a precise vocabulary of laboratory processes, each with its own symbol. The most important are listed below.

  • Calcination (🝞) — the heating of a substance to drive off volatile components and leave a dry powder (the calx). Alchemically, calcination was associated with fire and with the spiritual process of purification; one thinks of the smell of sulfur and sal ammoniac in a poorly ventilated workshop.
  • Dissolution (🜃) — the dissolving of a substance in a liquid, especially in the universal solvent alkahest. The symbol is a snake in water or a dragon devouring itself.
  • Separation (🜁) — the mechanical separation of components, often by filtration or decantation. The symbol shows a divided circle.
  • Conjunction (🝕) — the recombining of separated components. The symbol is two interlaced circles or a king and queen in embrace.
  • Fermentation (🜩) — the addition of a small amount of a perfected substance to a base substance to convert the whole. The alchemical model was the action of yeast in dough. The symbol is a sheaf of grain or a sprouting seed.
  • Distillation (🜌) — the vaporization and recondensation of a liquid. The symbol is a flask with a descending neck.
  • Coagulation (🜍) — the conversion of a liquid into a solid, often by cooling or evaporation. The symbol is a circle inscribed in a square.
  • Sublimation (🜞) — the conversion of a solid into a vapor and back into a solid, producing a fine powder. The symbol is a rising vapor.

The four color stages

The magnum opus — the great work of producing the philosopher’s stone — was traditionally divided into four stages marked by color changes. The sequence appears in the literature from Zosimos of Panopolis onward, though the citrinitas as a distinct third stage is an addition first articulated systematically in the Rosarium philosophorum (c. 1550) rather than in the Hellenistic sources (Szulakowska, The Alchemy of Light, 2000, pp. 137–145). It is worth pausing on the Zosimos texts, because most of the color vocabulary we still use comes from his fourth-century Greek.

  1. Nigredo, the blackening. The first stage, depicted as a black crow, a dead king, or a rotting corpse. The prima materia is broken down by calcination or putrefaction, and the blackness is the putrefaction that must precede all generation. The alchemists meant this literally: the mass goes black, and the practitioner has to trust the process through the apparent ruin of the work.
  2. Albedo, the whitening. The second stage, in which the dissolved matter is purified and whitened. The symbol is a white dove, a white queen, or the moon. The whitened matter is sometimes called the white stone or white elixir and is thought capable of transmuting base metals into silver.
  3. Citrinitas, the yellowing. An optional third stage, less commonly distinguished, depicted with a pale yellow color associated with the dawn, the morning star, and the planet Mercury. Some alchemical authors treat it as a stage in its own right; others subsume it into the albedo. The disagreement is not pedantic; it marks a real change in the literature between the Hellenistic and the Latin periods.
  4. Rubedo, the reddening. The final stage, depicted in deep red associated with blood, the sun, and the king. The red stone — the philosopher’s stone itself — is the agent of the perfect transmutation of base metals into gold.

Iconic alchemical images

A small set of vivid images recurs throughout the alchemical literature, and the alchemists treated them as a kind of visual commentary on the text. Six of them deserve individual treatment.

The ouroboros

The ouroboros — the snake or dragon devouring its own tail — is the most famous alchemical emblem and probably the most ancient. It appears on a second- or third-century Gnostic Abraxas gem, in the Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra (preserved in the tenth- or eleventh-century manuscript Codex Marcianus Graecus 299), and on the title page of the first volume of the Theatrum Chemicum (1602). The ouroboros represents the unity of all things, the cyclical nature of the alchemical process, and the self-sufficiency of nature, which provides the materials for its own transformation. The famous Greek inscription “the all is one” (ἕν τὸ πᾶν) is sometimes attached to it. The image is older than alchemy, and the alchemists adopted it because it was already saying what they wanted to say.

The green lion devouring the sun

The green lion devouring the sun is the alchemical emblem for vitriol — green iron(II) sulfate, the “oil of vitriol” — and the operation by which the volatile acid (the lion) is distilled from vitriol to dissolve the fixed, noble metal (the sun). The image encodes both the laboratory preparation of the acid and the fundamental act of the chrysopoeic program. It is also one of the most reproduced alchemical images in modern printed books, for the simple reason that it works as decoration even when you do not know what it means.

The king and queen, the marriage

The image of the king and queen in an embrace, or the marriage of Sol and Luna, represents the conjunction of opposites that is the heart of the alchemical work. The king is gold or the sun, the queen is silver or the moon, and their marriage produces the rebis, the double thing, the hermaphroditic offspring of the magnum opus. The iconography is older than alchemy — royal marriage imagery goes back to the ancient Near East — but the alchemists gave it a technical meaning. The Rosarium philosophorum of about 1550 is the canonical printed source for the marriage sequence.

The hermaphrodite

The rebis, the hermaphroditic figure that represents the perfected matter of the magnum opus, is one of the strangest images in the alchemical tradition. The rebis is depicted as a single body with both male and female characteristics, often crowned and winged, holding a scepter and an orb, and surrounded by the sun and the moon. The image represents the reconciliation of opposites that the alchemical work was held to effect. The 16th-century Splendor Solis (London, British Library, Harley MS 3469) gives the most reproduced rendering.

The dragon

The dragon appears in many alchemical images — sometimes winged and clawed, sometimes a serpent, sometimes a guardian of treasure. The green dragon is the prima materia in its dissoluble state (vitriol); the red dragon is sulphur or the rubedo; the winged dragon is sublimated matter, and the wingless dragon is mercury. The iconographic distinctions are not stable across the literature, but the dragon in its various colors marks the stages of the work. The image predates alchemy by centuries and was absorbed into the tradition the way it absorbed everything else.

The homunculus

The homunculus, the artificial human being produced in an alchemical flask, is one of the most disturbing images in the tradition. The recipe appears in the writings attributed to Paracelsus, specifically the De natura rerum and De generatione rerum naturalium (published in the Huser edition of the 1570s and 1580s). The image has been picked up in the Faustian tradition and in modern fiction. The homunculus represents the alchemist’s hubris, the ambition to create life in the laboratory, and the dangers of pursuing the work without moral preparation. Goethe’s Faust Part II is the literary high point of the motif; the alchemists themselves treated it more cautiously.

Ciphers and coded vocabularies

Beyond the iconic images, the alchemists developed an extensive system of letter-substitution ciphers, invented languages, and coded glossaries. A common scheme used the names of metals, planets, and animals to disguise the identity of substances: the alchemist might write of “our gold” when meaning sulfur, or of “the king’s daughter” when meaning the purified matter of the second stage of the opus. The coded vocabulary served several functions. It protected trade secrets, it excluded the uninitiated, and it allowed the alchemist to discuss dangerous or illicit substances — poisons, abortifacients, methods of counterfeiting — without explicit reference. Reading alchemical texts: practical advice

A few practical suggestions for the reader who wants to make sense of an alchemical text for the first time.

  1. Identify the genre. Is the text a recipe collection, a commentary on the Emerald Tablet, a visionary account of the alchemical process, or a devotional treatise? Each genre has its own conventions, and the conventions shape what the text is doing.
  2. Look for the three registers. Is the text speaking about matter, about the body, or about the soul? Alchemical writing can move between these registers without warning, and the same paragraph can be all three.
  3. Identify the substances. Many alchemical substances have multiple names. A “green lion” might be sulfuric acid, vitriol, or a stage in the alchemical process. Consult a glossary.
  4. Watch for the planetary scheme. A reference to “the influence of Saturn” might literally mean lead, or it might mean the principle of coldness and fixity. The same word can be a substance, a process, and a metaphysical claim.
  5. Look at the images. Many alchemical texts are heavily illustrated, and the images often clarify the text. Some of the most important manuscripts, including the Aurora Consurgens and the Splendor Solis, are intelligible as image sequences even when the prose is opaque.

The two most heavily illustrated alchemical codices for the reader to know are the early fifteenth-century Aurora Consurgens (Zurich, Zentralbibliothek, MS Rh. 172) and the sixteenth-century Splendor Solis (London, British Library, Harley MS 3469). Both are reproduced in full in modern facsimile editions and both repay long looking.

The visual grammar of alchemical texts

Beyond the individual symbols, the alchemists developed conventions for combining symbols into larger compositions. The most pervasive is the “ladder” arrangement: many alchemical illustrations are organized vertically, with the lower symbols representing the base matter and the higher symbols the perfected matter. The ladder is a visual compression of the magnum opus, and the alchemist who reads it is reading the stages of the work in a single image. The conventions of marriage, death-and-resurrection, garden, and throne function similarly: each compresses a stage or aspect of the work into a single emblem. The symbolic tradition across cultures

The Western, Chinese, Indian, and Islamic alchemical traditions each developed their own visual systems, with different individual symbols but strikingly similar compositional conventions: paired opposites, cyclical arrangement, and the integration of cosmic and human diagrams. The Chinese tradition, treated in the cluster on Chinese alchemy, used the yin-yang, the bagua, and the internal anatomy of the body. The Indian tradition, treated in the cluster on Indian alchemy, used the rasa (mercury) and the gandhaka (sulfur), the planetary metals, and the mandala. The parallels are real, but they are not exact; a Han-dynasty neidan diagram and a Latin Rosarium engraving are doing related but distinct symbolic work. The temptation to flatten them into a single “universal alchemical symbol system” should be resisted.

The manuscript tradition

The surviving alchemical manuscripts are the primary documentary record of the visual tradition, and a few deserve special mention.

The Aurora Consurgens (early 15th c., Zurich, Zentralbibliothek, MS Rh. 172) is the most heavily illustrated alchemical treatise of the medieval period, with full-page illuminations of every stage of the work. The Splendor Solis (16th c., London, British Library, Harley MS 3469) is a sequence of twenty-two emblematic pictures attributed to Salomon Trismosin and is among the most reproduced alchemical codices in modern printed editions. The Rosarium philosophorum (1550) is the canonical printed source for the visual schema of the four color stages, including the famous images of the king and queen, the putrefied corpse, and the resurrected red king. The Atalanta Fugiens of Michael Maier (1617) is the alchemical emblem book par excellence, with fifty emblems each accompanied by an epigram, a musical fugue, and a commentary, and it has been the subject of extensive study by Peter J. Forshaw and others. The Musaeum Hermeticum (1625) is the largest of the seventeenth-century alchemical compendia and the standard source for the visual language of the late Latin alchemical tradition. A serious reading must distinguish between manuscript illumination and printed emblem-book conventions. Manuscript illustration, as in the Aurora Consurgens and the Splendor Solis, is integrated with the text: the illuminator and the scribe worked in collaboration, and the image often glosses a specific passage. Printed emblem books, as in the Atalanta Fugiens and the Musaeum Hermeticum, treat the image as autonomous: the emblem stands on its own and the accompanying epigram and commentary are a separate register. The conventions of the two media are not the same, and a serious reading of the tradition has to keep the distinction in view.
